Planting Seeds
Planting Seeds
This has been a very busy week for me. Actually, I’ve been busy all summer. As a hobby, I work on computers, I even occasionally make a few dollars doing it....but what I was thinking is that most of the repairs I do come as a result of the owner not doing the simple, yet necessary tasks that help keep their computers free from viruses, malware and spyware. So what’s the point? I got to thinking that’s how we let sin into our lives. We let our guard down, neglect the spiritual disciplines that keep us in a close relationship with our God, and before we know it, we have a major sin issue we have to deal with. We allow sin to slowly creep into our lives because we neglect time in His Word and heart to heart relationship with Him. We grieve the Holy Spirit and quench His work in us. In Hebrews 12:5 we are told “See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.” That word translated here as bitter root is more commonly translated bitterness. The Greek transliteration of the word is pikria and it’s pronounced pik-ree'-ah. (I’m not sure if this qualifies for onomatopoeia, but the Greek word really gives me a sense of prickly, bitter.) I really like the word picture of a root for bitterness because that is one of those sins that often starts out very small (at least in our minds, certainly no sin is small or insignificant in God’s eyes), just a little tiny seed of bitterness is planted. Then before long we’ve watered it and fertilized it to the point that it really begins to send down deep roots and sprout out. Before long the bitter root has gotten so large that it starts to choke out everything around it in its fight to get all the water and nutrients for itself. It slowly wraps its roots around our heart and we are held captive by its grip. It eventually affects all we do and every relationship we have. If only we had done the preventive work beforehand and not allowed that to begin to take root in us.
Ephesians 4:31 tells us to get rid of all bitterness (same word), because many times bitterness that is watered and fertilized leads to rage, anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. But the next verse has the perfect prescription for what we should plant in its place. Ephesians 4:32 says “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” If we are obedient to this command, that tiny seed of bitterness will never be planted and instead we will have a garden of kindness and compassion growing in its place.

Amen, Sister!!! I told you to write these things down. What a blessing to have read all of these great truths you have written about.
I love the way you have ended this with brutal truth: watering seeds of bitterness leads to "anger, rage, malice, slander..."
You mean that the other person is not the cause of these unlovely outpourings? Your finger is not pointing behind or beside. From this blog unto me is a very straight line.
AND I'M THANKFUL!
You mean these are tiny seeds of rebellion grown?
and what else is in that list? "filthy language," which describes all the before mentioned and describes everything unkind, which I consider to be inclusive of thoughts. At least for me, and of course countless others... there is a lot of language spinning around in my mind.
Filthy language is that which is pollutive. It is all speech (spoken and unspoken) that does not pursue wholeness in the other... helping to build up according to need- and thus please the HOLY SPIRIT. That list from Colossians, prior says: "You used to walk in these ways in the life you once lived, but now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these..." Why? because CHRIST is seated as the KING of heaven and we "have been raised with CHRIST."
I picture the classic fencing scene from the movie: The Princess Bride, but with a little change in verbiage: "First I am a follower of JESUS CHRIST, seeds of bitterness: PREPARE TO DIE!!!"
"Put to death therefore whatever belongs to your earthly nature..."
and if we do not, the result is "if you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other." and so, though free, "serve one another in love."
Do what? SERVE.
Serve UPWARD which often is outward. What I mean is that with every service toward man (all kinds here)I am serving the KING OF KINGS.
wash feet--- whatever that means in every circumstance. be the love of JESUS CHRIST personified.
BRUTAL SELF TRUTH: I have chosen to devour bitter seeds, adding water-water-water. And once again, it is time to gather up the roots and gather up the destructive weeds. Swallow TRUTH and let it redeem. choose to water-water-water instead with godly thoughts, deeds, intentions and speech.
oh... one more thing...
sometimes it's just the computer owner not knowing what port to plug a plug in. port confusion. you wanna blog that??? :)
You have a point, Holiday. Many times we get our cables all mixed up and instead of plugging into the one true source of our power and godliness, we try a whole lot of different ports. We wonder why we don't have victory over sin issues in our life and it's simply because we're not plugged in to the right source. Most of the time, we've crossed the lines and we are seeking to run our own lives on our own power and strength. it's time to untangle those lines and plug into the right port!
